Invitations extended to Championship, 1st and 2nd section bands, plus all Ayrshire bands.  Kilmarnock Concert Brass, graded 3rd section, was the only lower-section Ayrshire band to accept the invitation.


Contest format: bands required to play a test piece composed before 1970 plus an own-choice hymn tune
